Biography
Ms. Leonisa S. Tumaob is the youngest daughter of Felimon Taunan Tumaob and Rosa Flores Sinel of Argao, Malay, Aklan. She completed her elementary school education at Balusbos Elementary School and graduated with honors. She completed her secondary education at Melchor Memorial High School in Ibajay, Aklan, from her first to third year, and then transferred to the Central Institute of Technology in Manila, where she graduated with honors. In 1961, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Aklan College in Kalibo, Aklan.
Her teaching career started after she took the competitive examination at St. Agnes Academy in Legaspi City. While teaching at the said school, she enrolled at St. Aquinas, Legaspi City, and took a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Filipino and a minor in English.
In 1972, she returned to her hometown, Malay, and taught at Malay Community High School from 1972 to 1976. In 1977, she became a teacher at Balabag Elementary School and was assigned as Community Adult Education District Coordinator, a program that aims to teach the community about gardening, tree planting, and beautification. She was promoted to Master Teacher I and later to Head Teacher III at the same school in 1980, while also serving as Assistant Principal at Boracay Barangay High School. Boracay Barangay High School was renamed Boracay National High School as per the provisions of Republic Act 6655, often known as the "Free Public Secondary Education Act of 1988." She was also delegated as the person in charge of the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports Hostel Practice House for the Technical Vocational Course for Home Economics subjects. The hostel served as a training laboratory for students specializing in home economics and also as a haven for teachers from other provinces who came to visit the island. She eventually succeeded as a full-fledged Principal I of Boracay National High School in 1994, after many years of striving to be the best she could be.
"Nang Luning", as she is fondly called by her loved ones and acquaintances, Leonisa S. Tumaob is a catalyst for magnanimous developments in the Municipality of Malay, particularly in the field of education. Having served as a classroom teacher for a long period of time, she has selflessly devoted her life to fulfilling a multifaceted role. While performing her duties and obligations as a teacher, she also broadens her abilities as a servant of God by volunteering in roles that benefit the entire local community.
Significance
Aesthetic
Ms. Tumaob’s eye for music and the arts led her to meet former Senator Miriam Santiago, where she opened up about her eagerness to put up a Rondalla band and asked the late senator for financial aid to purchase the needed equipment. The latter donated musical instruments worth Php 200,000.00, which led to the formation of a music ensemble with talented students as members. The group provides accompaniment during special occasions and entertainment activities.
Socioeconomic
Ms. Tumaob organized the Boracay National High School SILAK Dancers to enhance the skills and potential of the talented students. These dancers were able to earn money by performing at various resorts on the island. The proceeds from the earnings of these student performers help them make ends meet.
Social
Among her outstanding achievements in education is the establishment of Boracay National High School-Yapak Extension, now known as Lamberto H. Tirol National High School, in 2003. In 2006, she worked out the establishment of another public secondary school, then known as Boracay National High School-Manocmanoc Extension currently known as Manocmanoc National High School, to cater to the growing number of students from feeder schools as well as students and their families who move to Boracay Island in search of greater opportunities. Students in the two Barangays are enjoying easy access to education thanks to the establishment of two new secondary schools. It also helped parents in saving for their children's school expenses, which is believed to have contributed greatly to the growing number of successful graduates in the area.
After retiring from government service in 2007, she became an instrument in supporting decisions that led to the creation of Boracay Island Global Academy, a learning institution that she now considers her second home after serving in public school. It is a private school designed to fulfill the diverse needs of the island's international pupils.
