TYPE OF CULTURAL INSTITUTION

Odiong Elementary School is a public elementary school offering Kindergarten to Grade 6.

III. NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

In 1946 when the war between America and Japan ended, the Odiong Primary School opened to teach kindergarten and grade 1 in Barangay Odiong. Mr. Cornelio Gregorio Pador was the first teacher/School Head of the school. In its first year, there were no classrooms, and learning was held in a private house owned by the De Pedro family.

In 1949, Odiong Primary School had a Fourth Grade; the same year, the school moved to its current location in Odiong Proper. The land was donated by what was then called Tenyente Del Barrio from Batan, The Dela Cruz Family, and Geroy Family. Mr. Cornelio Pador built classrooms made of wood, coconut lumber, and nipa from his pocket because of a lack of funding from the government. In 1951, the said school became a complete elementary school.

When Mr. Pador died, Mr. Panfilo Martirez became the head teacher. Under the management of Mr. Martirez, there were projects such as the leveling of the ground and the construction of new buildings. It was also during his time that the Marcos Type building was built, which in 2013 was damaged due to typhoon Yolanda.

In 1978, Dr. Paterno Cleope took over as Principal of Odiong Elementary School. During his two-year tenure as Principal, the said school became active in competitions such as cultural and sports, where they always won. During his time, the school had many projects and programs. One of them is the demolition of the main building, which the foundation and flooring are still visible today, and the construction of new buildings.

Some of his other projects include the construction of a water pan and a nutrition kitchen, where they were the only school in Altavas that were given equipment from Manila. This is where the Nutri Bun bread given to students during recess is cooked. The school also had a program called Blue Revolution in which the citizens of Barangay Odiong participated in an exhibit of marine products. Teachers from Aklan and other provinces came to witness the Blue Revolution. The other projects still present today are the stage, mini forest, and basketball court that only Odiong Elementary School has in the district. Dr. Cleope also started the Budyong Publication, which the school’s current teachers now revive.

DESCRIPTION OF SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES

Today, Odiong Elementary School is under the leadership of their School Principal, Dr. Analyn C. Perez, 2021 Dangal ng Bayan National Winner of the Civil Service Commission. Odiong Elementary School is one of the top-performing schools in the District of Altavas that continues to excel in various fields—won as the most beautiful School in 2017 and 3rd place in Brigada Eskwela 2020 in the Division of Aklan.

Odiong Elementary School has many alumni who are successful in their fields in different parts of the world. The school continues to provide quality education and services that follow the mission and vision of the Department of Education.

Some of the notable alumni of Odiong Elementary School are Mrs. Povencia Pacis, the first to graduate from a four-year course and served Odiong Elementary School for 40 years as a teacher; Dr. Linavilla P. Arceño, former Odiong Elementary School Alumni and Former Pupils Association (OESAFPA) President, University of the Philippines (UP) graduate, and a retired School Principal II of Altavas National School; Mrs. Richelda Cortes, UP graduate, former School Principal I of Altavas National School; Mrs. Ledy L. David, former OESAFPA President and a retired School Principal II of Odiong Elementary School; Dr. Jonabeth D. Vicente, OESAFPA President, Doctor of Internal Medicine; Mr. Jonell S. Gregorio, UP graduate, national winner as a coach and writer in the field of journalism and the first Aklanon to win the Peter Solis Nery Grand Prize in literature; Mrs. Aira Rose P. Panadero, Top 10 in the Chemical Technician Licensure Examination 2021; and, Mr. Evy B. Cleope, retired Master Teacher II of Odiong Elementary School, and is now active in community service as President of Barangay Odiong Senior Citizens and Odiong Catholic Association.

IV. STORIES AND NARRATIVES

During the war between America and Japan, there was no school in Barangay Odiong. The children were studying in the nearby barangay at Linayasan Elementary School. In 1946, Odiong Primary School opened. One of the wise students who studied here was Povencia S. Pacis. With her intelligence, she accelerated to study in the sixth grade and was transferred to Altavas Elementary School to finish her elementary education.

She was the first to graduate with a 4-year course in the barangay. Because of her academic achievements, she became a teacher at Odiong Elementary School. According to her, one that she will not forget is the conduct of the Blue Revolution in 1979 because many people visited the school from different parts of Region 6; she described it as the happiest event under Dr. Paterno Cleope’s leadership. She taught for 40 years and retired in 1992. today Mrs. Povencia S. Pacis is 90 years old and still has a sharp memory of her experiences as a teacher at the said institution.

V. SIGNIFICANCE

Historical – Odiong Elementary School is the oldest school in Barangay Odiong, founded in 1946. It is also considered one of the most senior schools in the district of Altavas.

Aesthetic - Won as the most beautiful school in the Division of Aklan in 2017; Odiong Elementary School's location on the national highway made it maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the school with the help of stakeholders.

Economical - The school annually holds an Alumni homecoming where it receives cash or in-kind donations from alumni. It is used for school projects such as repairing bathrooms, renovating classrooms, etc.

Social – Odiong Elementary School is an integral part of the community. They provide the foundations of skills and knowledge, educate, socialize children, and give them the resources they need to grow, thrive, and become productive citizens of our country.

VI. ASSESSMENT OF THE INSTITUTION

A. CONDITION/STATUS OF THE INSTITUTION

The school buildings underwent renovation in 2014 due to typhoon Yolanda. Now, these buildings need minor repairs to be conducive to learning. Year after year, classrooms are being repaired using the school’s Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE).

B. CONSTRAINTS/ THREATS/ ISSUES/ CHALLENGES

The school does not have a fence on its eastern side, so people and animals such as dogs can enter the school, making the children, teachers, and school equipment unsafe.

C. MEASURES AND DESCRIPTION OF SAFEGUARDING MEASURES TAKEN

One of the proposed projects for the alumni funds is the construction of a perimeter fence on the eastern part of the school. This is for the safety of the children, teachers, stakeholders, and facilities.
