NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

(Include the mandate, history, officials, contact details, and other pertinent data)

Ondoy Barrio High School was born out of the enthusiasm and self-determination of the Ondoy Barrio Council, headed by Mrs. Trinidad Osorio Gonzales, who sought the expertise and advice of Mr. Nicolas S. Martinez, Ondoy Elementary School Head in the year 1967. With his help, the council worked for the passage of establishing a secondary school. Mrs. Gonzales toiled tirelessly, sacrificing her time and financial resources from the start until it was materialized and became a well-established institution.

The birth of Ondoy Barrio High School was realized with Barrio Resolution No. 02, series of 1967. It was on July 15, 1968, when the school started with only nineteen (19) students enrolled under the tutelage of Mrs. Eve O. Iligan and housed at the residence of Mrs. Trinidad O. Gonzales. The existence of the school was regarded by Ondoyanons as the answer to alleviate the illiteracy problem in the community.

The year 1973 was a crucial period for the school as problems of closure due to a lack of funds, classrooms, teachers, and few enrollees. Mr. Renne T. Tefora, then, Barrio Captain paid an audience to the Schools Division Superintendent explaining the importance of a secondary school in the barrio. As the number of enrollees gradually increased, the Barrio Council deemed it wise to look for funds for the construction of a temporary building. At that time, the residences of Mrs. Trinidad O. Gonzales, Mr. & Mrs. Mauro Magsipoc, Mr. & Mrs. Lucio Sentones, and Mr. Ricardo Dalisay became the first classrooms of the school's pioneer students. With the help of some civic-minded senior citizens and out-of-school youths (Serenaders Club), two classrooms made of nipa and bamboo rose inside the Ondoy Elementary School site.

Pursuant to the passage of Republic Act No. 6655 otherwise known as the "Free Public Secondary Education Act of 1989" with the provision on converting locally funded barrio high school into a national high school, the Ondoy Barrio High School became now known as Ondoy National High School (ONHS). Ondoy NHS has a total land area of 10, 312 square meters with twenty-three classrooms. It also caters to learners from its adjacent barangays such as barangay Aquino, Antipolo, and Tagbaya.

Ondoy NHS offers General Academic Strand and Technical- Vocational-Livelihood Track specializing in Masonry NC II, Food and Beverage Services NC II, and Bread and Production NC II.

Currently, the school consists of 20 JHS and 9 SHS strong and competent teaching personnel, and three administrative staff, under the supervision of School Principal, Mary Jean R. Oczon.

This educational institution lives by its mantra, “Pamayagpag Ondoy National High School.”

ASSESSMENT OF THE INSTITUTION

A. CONDITION/STATUS OF THE INSTITUTION

Some of the school buildings are in good condition and offer students a comfortable environment for learning. The school has 23 classrooms including the Principal’s Office and laboratory. Out of 23 rooms, thirteen are in good condition, ten rooms are almost subject to condemnation. It plans to demolish and replace the outdated Marcos Building. Six classrooms can be used as an evacuation center in the event of calamities like typhoons and floods while the remaining ones are in flood-prone locations and, thus, cannot be used to accommodate evacuees. The school, together with the teachers who use the rooms, performs minor repairs to their classrooms to make the learning environment conducive to learning.

B. CONSTRAINTS/THREATS/ISSUES/CHALLENGES:

(Reasons for the condition/status)

The school faced many challenges and setbacks. The Marcos Building must be replaced because it has been so long since it was built, and work on that project is currently waiting for approval from the Central Office. Typhoons, floods, and earthquakes were some of the other natural disasters that affected the institution. Currently, flooding on rainy days poses a hazard to the learning environment, especially in the lower portion of the school grounds.

C. MEASURES AND DESCRIPTION OF SAFEGUARDING MEASURES TAKEN:

For the Marcos Building project, the school administrator made a follow-up with the Division Engineering Office in this regard. Moreover, regular conduct of school and hazard mapping to bring more concrete and practical school-based disaster risk reduction actions is put in place. In compliance conferring to the principles set by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, ONHS, through the headship of the School DRRM Coordinator, conducts a hazard mapping to identify possible risks in order to ensure safety and welfare. Training on emergency preparedness to equip teachers and learners with necessary adaptive skills was mobilized in partnership with the LDRRMO and LGU.
