Description
Morphology
- Flower: The flowers can be found on the upper leaf axils and terminal ends of the branches; the inflorescence is a branched cluster about 10-20cm long. The flower is bright yellow, fragrant and about 1.5 cm long. Each flower comprises of five petals, namely one broadly ovate to orbicular standard petal, two oblong wing petals and two oblong keel petals. Within the keel, there are 10 stamens which occur in two bundles of five.
- Leaves: Leaves are alternate, odd-pinnate (pinnate with an odd number of leaflets) and 20-25 cm long. The leaf stalk(petiole) is 1.5-4 cm long. Each leaf has 5-11 leaflets which are broadly ovate to elliptic shaped (4-15 cm long and 2-9 cm wide). The terminal leaflet is larger than the other leaflets. Each leaflet has 8-10 pairs of lateral veins and the midrib is flat or impressed above. The tip of the leaflet is abruptly acuminate to mucronate while the base is rounded to broadly cuneate. Stipule is lanceolate (1-1.5 cm long) and falls off early. Young leaves are sparsely hairy, becoming smooth and hairless as they mature.
- Fruiting: The narra tree contains small fruits which are covered by membranous wings (pod) of (4-6) cm in diameter. The pod is disk shaped which is hairy when young and later turns to smooth. In the center part of the fruit, there may be one or two monocotyledonous seeds. The fruit ripens at the age of (4-6) years and it turns to purple when dried.
- Fragrance: The flowers of the narra tree has an extremely sweet fragrance. The narra tree is declared as the National Tree of the Philippines in 1934 by Governor-General Frank Murphy of the Insular Government of the Philippine Islands. It was made the national tree of the Philippines because it symbolizes people’s strength and power.
- Special Notes: The narra tree is declared as the National Tree of the Philippines in 1934 by Governor-General Frank Murphy of the Insular Government of the Philippine Islands. It was made the national tree of the Philippines because it symbolizes people’s strength and power.
Common Uses and Scope of Use:
- Ornamentals. It is used as decorative tree in parks and side of roads
- Medicinal (used as drugs, medicines). The infusion of leaves are used to make shampoo. The wood is the source of red dye and gum, kino. Young leaves are used to treat boils, prickly heat and ulcers. Shredded bark of the Narra Tree is used to treat diarrhea and dysentery. Juice extracted from the roots of the tree is used to treat syphilitic sores.
- Other Uses. Narra Tree has premium quality wood which is in demand in making high end furniture and musical instruments.
Stories Associated with the Plant
This narra tree found at the property of Malinao Elementary School along Roxas Avenue was more than fifty years old. It is almost thirty meters high and two meters in diameter. It was able to withstand the numerous natural calamities like strong typhoons, floods, and droughts that have affected Aklan province and the town of Malinao for more than five decades. There are also some supernatural events associated with this tree. The adviser of Grade VI-Star whose classroom is near the said narra tree usually said that when it’s dusk time, she usually smells something unusually fragrant. Some Grade VI pupils, who claim to have a third eye said that they saw small children roaming outside their classroom. Recently, during the Regional Meet 2023, some members of the Capiz delegation staying in Grade VI- Star room said that they saw a man in barong tagalog outside their room during the second night of their stay. They asked one teacher at our school if there is a “binayle” going on in the town plaza but the teacher answered there was none. The teachers of Malinao Elementary School therefore concluded that our” dear friend” struck again not to scare the visitors but to remind them not to disturb his much-deserved peace and quiet.
Significance
Aesthetic
This narra tree is a sight to behold especially during the month of February to May because of its shimmering mass of fragrant yellow blooms that are very attractive and its spreading dome-shaped crown and drooping branches that provide shade to weary travelers and pedestrians.
Conservation
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is the government agency that is responsible for the conservation, management, and development of the country’s environment and natural resources. The narra tree is considered an endangered species so cutting or harvesting of this tree and its parts is strictly prohibited by law.
Status: The narra tree is critically endangered because only a few remains in the wild.
Constraints/Threats/Issues: Narra, being one of the most beneficial timbers in the Philippines is used for a lot of products such as cabinetry, cart wheels, carving, construction, furniture, and musical instruments that is the reason why people are cutting the narra tree extensively because of its high wood value which has led to it becoming endangered.
Conservation Measures: The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is very strict in the implementation in cutting, transporting and in the preservation of narra tree being the National Tree of the Philippines.
