The school continuously embraced improvements in terms of its academic instructions and physical facilities. However, the school has not been spared from major calamities. One of which was the highest flood in the municipality caused by Super Typhoon Frank on June 23, 2008 that had caused major damages in schools properties and records. The school gradually recovered from its nightmare and gradually emerged victorious as years went by.
With its hardworking past and present school heads, notable changes have occurred. The school has currently acquired additional untitled lot donated by the Provincial Government of Aklan with an area of 5,445.20 sq.m. Presently, the school has 29 classrooms including five makeshift classrooms. The school has two (2) ICT Laboratories, one Science Laboratory, one TVL Laboratory, one functional library, and an operating school canteen.
NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION
The school is located in Barangay Poblacion, Madalag, Aklan. It serves as a home for learners from Poblacion and other nearby barangays of the municipality. It also caters learners from nearby barangays of Libacao and Banga. The school is accessible by motorcycles, tricycles, and other four-wheeled vehicles.
Founded in 1966, the school was formerly named Madalag Community High School. It shared buildings of Madalag Elementary School to cater its first batch of learners. When the nationalization of all secondary schools was implemented through DECS Order No. 40 s. 1988 and DECS Order No. 44 s. of 1988, a subsequent order was issued through DECS Order No. 104 s. 1988 titled “Guidelines for Selection of Recipient Schools for the School Building Project Under the Secondary Education Development Program (SEDP) Financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).”
The incumbent school head and local executives jointly exerted efforts to acquire a titled land area of 8,405 sq. m. which paved its way to become a recipient of Php 5.4 million worth 1 storey Batch 2 SEDP Building Package with complete science laboratory, Home Economics laboratory and a functional library. It was in 1992 that the school was renamed Madalag National High School when the government fully funded secondary schools across the country.
DESCRIPTION OF SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES:
Quality Education is the primary goal of all educational institutions. The success of delivering quality basic education to all our learners depends on the quality of management staff, teachers, and stakeholders the school possesses. The effectiveness and efficiency of PAPs depend on the careful crafting the School Improvement Plan as a product of the collaboration of the school's internal and external stakeholders.
As the bearer of excellence in secondary schools in the municipality, the school takes pride in having produced 100% passers in Bread and Pastry Production NC II in 2018 and 2019 and Agri Crop Production NC II in 2020.
The school was also adjudged as Three Star Schools in the Wash-in-Schools of the Division of Aklan for SY 2021-2022. The school has produced regional winners in sports like Volleyball, Track and Field, and in 2018, the school produced Silver Medalist in Pencak Selat in the Palarong Pambansa.
Recently, our school has produced graduates who are passers in the Licensure Examination for Teachers, Criminology Licensure Examinations, Midwifery Licensure Examination, and even in the BAR Examinations. It actively participated in almost all programs of the DepEd Aklan as well as spearheaded municipal activities like municipal fiesta celebrations and the famous Tinuom Festival. Some of our Senior High School graduates are DOST Scholars, proof of which is the presence of two teachers who are members of the school's teaching staff.
The school has strong community linkages that are considered partners in the development of the school. The Madalag National High School Alumni Association has recently donated an amount of Php 85,000.00 for the provision of the ceiling of our makeshift classroom and the construction of a steel gate amounting to Php 50,000.00.
Moreover, the implementation of Brigada Eskwela has contributed so much in the successful implementation of the school's programs, activities, and projects. The support of the Local Government Unit through the Special Education Fund had provided the school with supplies and equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic and even up to the present.
STORIES AND NARRATIVES
In a quest for knowledge and the tremendous call for education, some well-meaning Madalagnons pooled out their resources and efforts together to put-up a secondary school in the Municipality of Madalag. It is the realization of the cherished dream of its people and the response as well to the numerous requests of unnumbered elementary school graduates not just in the central but also in the barangays with complete elementary schools. Before this noble undertaking was made possible, only those who are privileged were given the opportunity to enroll in a secondary school either in Kalibo or Banga but those who are less privileged has a slimmer chance.
In the year 1964, a dream to put up a secondary school didn’t come true easily. Primary requisites and priorities prior to its opening came along the way. These serious undertakings were observed and responded by the former Local Chief Executive Atty. Emilio C. Nabor. First, a request was made to the incumbent Municipal Mayor Leovigildo N. Diapo to appropriate funds for the operation and maintenance of the Community High School. At the instance and efforts of Atty. Nabor, the Madalag Barangay High School was opened in Poblacion beginning school year 1964 – 1965. Because of the above-mentioned deficiencies, its opening was hanged. After two years of struggles consistent remedial action, its formal operation and opening happened in the year 1966. Its initial operation then was with the support of the local administration. Since the former and incumbent mayors are of different dominant political parties, (the Liberal & Nacionalista Parties), they reached out to an agreement that the high school should be under the joint support of the two parties, with the local government as the responsible entity for its initial operation and the two parties would solicit from the barrios for its operation. It was further agreed that former Mayor Nabor would solicit the ten percent shares from the real estate taxes from the barrio councils under the control of the Nacionalista Party and the ten percent shares of the barrio councils under the Liberal Party. Following the agreement and with the full cooperation of the two parties, the Madalag Barangay High School was formally opened with Atty. Emilio C. Nabor given the authority to hire the services of the teachers. At the time of its opening, Ms. Evangeline C. Nemis, now Evangeline N. Nalangan was prevailed upon by Atty. Nabor to transfer to Madalag Barangay High School from Cadiz High School on August 22, 1966. Another private school teacher, Mr. Dioscoro Regno was hired and other teachers were from the central school rendering their services on honoraria basis.
Still being an “infant” educational institution, it truly adhered to the countless burdens two years after its opening. The first and the most required was the unavailability of a school lot and classrooms to name a few, calls for an immediate attention and rigorous action from the management and stakeholders. The MBHS during these days was even adjectively judged “squatters” for there were no single classroom for her own use. The building and classroom used then by the faculty and students were owned by the Madalag Elementary School. There were times where classes were conducted under the shady trees of Indian mangoes and star apple. Late in 1970’s, the situation improved when building was constructed in the lot of the Madalag Elementary School. These improvements were sufficient enough to accommodate the increasing school population, and this time with full time secondary school teachers. Due to the fast growing school populace every year, additional rooms of the elementary were still used to house the uncontrollable growing students.
Year 1990 marks the developmental transformation of the Madalag Community High School. Through the initiative of Mayor Archimedes N. Orbista and the municipal officials of the Municipality of Madalag, the school was allotted a one-hectare lot where the present Madalag National Hgih School stood up. It was made possible through the collective discussions of the school administration and the local officials. This gave way to the biggest leap of the school forward when it was awarded with the Php 5.4 million worth of SEDP building. The SEDP building in its own lot is an attraction in itself; it was almost complete in school needs; own water system, functional library, science laboratory and Home Economics room. Undoubtedly, with the SEDP, the Madalag National High School was one of the few who has the modern school building in the Province of Aklan. Although it is in need of development and improvement to cope to the present competitive and challenging educational processes, the learning condition is several times better than before.
The role of the parents and the community in the transformation of the Madalag National High School must not be over-emphasized. From its conception to its birth, the community still holds on its promise of progress and success. A Parent Teacher Association (PTA) was organized and Mr. Pedro Gubatina was the First President in the year 1966 – 1968. The two years of his tenure were the most crucial for the school which was just starting then. Other PTA presidents were: Mr. Brigido Nacasabug (1968 – 1969), Mr. Januario Legaspi (1969 – 1971), Rev. Fr. Servando S. Cunanan (1971 – 1978), Rev. Fr. Jose Dollete (1978 – 1985), Mr. Orlando R. Inosanto (1986 – 1988) and Mayor Archimedes N. Orbista (1989 – 1991), Mrs. Vilma N. Tandog, Mr. Ricardo C. De Chino, Mrs. Rene L. Nadua, Engr. Hannibal N. Cometa, Mrs. Maecon C. Inguin, Mr. Wladyslaw A. Legaspi and Mrs. Matelina Z. Castro who currently serves as General PTA President. These past and present presidents and their officials played a vital role in what Madalag National High School is today.
The school will not be as what it is without the administrators who stood and implemented educational thrusts and programs. The pioneer teacher Mrs. Evangeline N. Nalangan was appointed as the first Principal of the school on July 9, 1982. She served MNHS up to the last day of her retirement in January 16, 2006. Mrs. Nalangan, a true blooded Madalagnon, employed and instilled to the students and mentors the essence of education. Professional development of the secondary school teachers and the upliftment of moral values of students were some of her priorities. She understands every aspect affecting learning, the geographical situation and financial instability of the Madalagnons which hinders young and ambitious graduates to pursue secondary education. This scenario calls for a response and an expansion was planned readily. And because of her initiative and linkage to the local government, an extension school was opened on August 27, 1998 at Barangay Alaminos to be known as Madalag National High School – Alaminos Extension (now Alaminos National High School) to accommodate elementary graduates of Barangays in the Timbaban side. Shortly after five years, another extension school was opened in Barangay Mamba known as Madalag National High School – Mamba Extension to house the elementary graduates of the Dumalaylay side. The opening of the two extension schools is credited to Mrs. Evangeline N. Nalangan and Mayor Archimedes N. Orbista and his council.
Upon the retirement of Mrs. Evangeline N. Nalangan, Mrs. Isabelita A. Igharas took the vacant post and she served MNHS for one and half years. The construction of the school canteen and the improvement of the Information and Technology Center were her priorities. In July 2007, another Madalagnon took the principal position, Mr. Michael Torres Rapiz in lieu of the transfer of Mrs. Igharas in her hometown Malinao. Mr. Rapiz who believes that education is a never ending process, focused his programs on professional development, allowing the faculty to attend various seminars, conferences and symposia, and readily demands its execution or application to the learning area taught. When Mr. Rapiz was promoted to Education Supervisor I (English), Mr. Jessie S. Flores took over his post on January 14, 2009. The transfer of Mr. Flores to another district gives the chance to a Madalag Community High School alumnus Mr. Jose Niro R. Nillasca to be the head of MNHS community. He served the school for a short period of time (January 2010 – November 2010) due to his promotion as Principal I which then the principal position was took over by Mr. Ramie T. Mansayon (November 2010 – October 2013). When Mr. Mansayon transferred to another school, he was replaced by Mr. Norlito V. Isagan which his service started from October 2013 up to June 2014. Mrs. Felpa D. Gardose took over the Principal II position from June, 2014 up to march 2020 where dr. Felpa D. Gardose made her retirement. After which Mrs. Catherine Alejandrea N. Padalhin served as officer-in-charge for one year from one year March 2020 up to March 2021. Exactly after a year, the vacant position School Principal II Dr. Felpa D. Gardose was filled-in by Reginald C. Venancio from March 19, 2021 up to the present. Indeed, the school is lucky enough to have a dedicated and appropriate School head.
Amidst the school’s unforgettable beginning, the graduates of our beloved Madalag National High School speak of the quality of education it provides. Its graduates represent every spectrum in the society here and abroad. With this observable and humble evidences, from a cherished dream to a fruitful reality, the Madalag National High School will continue making history, of its quest for a never ending educational excellence, producing competent, effective, responsible and globally competitive individuals is the prime vision that we stands for and we are guided by our mission of providing basic, relevant, and quality education to every Madalagnon youth.
Soar high Madalag National High School, spread your wings and be still a dependable educational institution of the youths in the coming years!
